Mastika is a liqueur seasoned with mastic, native to Greece. A resin gathered from the Madtic tree, native to the Mefiterranean region.
A variant is mastiha, which is brandy based, and produced on the island of Chios and has a protected designation of origin in the EU.
The name of the resin, and the name of the drink, is derived from the Greek “to chew”.
Served with mezedes- appetizers such as octopus, salad, sardines, calamari, fried zucchini, and clams.
Often served with dessert. Sweet smell. Flavored like licorice.
